What's Going on with Wedding Flowers?

If you’re planning a 2023 or 2024 wedding, chances are you’ve encountered some exhausted florists talking about a truly unprecedented flower shortage!

We wanted to take a moment to explain what is happening in the floral industry right now, how that might affect your wedding, and what you can expect from Haute Floral as your wedding florist!

First, what is causing the shortage?

Well basically, when Covid first hit the world weddings & events screeched to a halt. This meant that floral farms and supplies were left with tons of product that wasn’t purchased and essentially rotted away. (You can’t keep those fresh flowers forever!) And then, in response to lock downs and quarantines, a lot of suppliers had to scale back on planting and growing just to stay afloat and keep their doors open.

When wedding came back and people were ready to get celebrating again, the demand for fresh flowers spiked like crazy but the supply available was too low! Leaving florists and customers with not enough fresh floral ingredients to fulfill their orders and designs.

What does this mean for me?

If you’re planning a wedding right now, here’s the situation:

  • Florals are in short supply. We may not be able to promise specific types of blooms. Even basic ingredients like roses can be limited!

  • The price for flowers has increased. This means, you may have to spend more to get the look you want OR understand that your budget won’t get you as far as you originally planned.

We know this isn’t what you imagined your wedding process to look like. And it is definitely okay to feel a little down or heartbroken over this. Believe us, it’s tough for the florists too! We want more than anything, to deliver your wedding flowers exactly how you envision.

What We Can Do

Now, on to the action plan. What can you do to get the florals you want and what are we doing to make that happen?

As the client, you should:

  1. Book early, early, EARLY! Seriously, the earlier you get your order in with a florist, the better chance you have of getting what you want. It still can’t be guaranteed, but your place in line will be secured!

  2. Be flexible! We know that’s hard when you’ve been planning and envisioning your wedding for so long. But, give us your trust and we promise, we will do everything in our power to make it beautiful. At the end of the day, that’s what we want too! We just need your cooperation to make that happen.

  3. Be prepared to talk numbers. Budget has always been important to discuss, but now even more so. Again, flower prices have spiked! Your budget will not go as far as you originally planned! It may cost more to get the look you want.

As your florist, we will:

  1. Provide creative ideas! Trust us, we’ve been designing weddings for many years. We know how to get creative when smaller budgets and tight restrictions. So ask for input and let us put our thinking caps on together.

  2. Use our design eye. We know how to make things look good. We just need your trust. Again, ask your designer for their input! We’ll provide you some suggestions that you might not have thought of or ways to maximize your budget & design to make it beautiful.

  3. Be on your team. Here’s the truth we want to leave you with. We are on your team! You hired us to make your wedding vision happen and that is what we want to do more than anything! So just know, when we’re explaining what’s going on in the industry it is still through the lens of making your wedding day everything you wanted and more. This is always our goal!

It’s Going to be Beautiful

One more thing before we go. At the end of the day, if you end up married, that was a successful and beautiful wedding! It can be easy to get caught up in the details and the vision, but we promise when your focus is your new marriage, everything else is icing on the cake! So take a deep breath and remember, we’ve got your back. It’ll be beautiful.

What is your favorite feature of your venue? Is there anywhere specific you wish more couples would incorporate florals?

There are too many to name! From the stunning trusses, and oversized fireplaces to the hidden creek bed, but our favorite overall feature is how The Laurel feels like home to our couples, their guests and vendors! We love seeing how couples make the venue their own and it’s amazing how floral can transform the feeling of any space they touch.

Share a favorite memory of a previous event at your space!

We have so many! One of our favorite moments at every event is right after the ceremony, when we greet our couples with a glass of champagne and see the joy on their faces as they toast to their new lives together. We wish we could bottle those moments of absolute joy!

What should couples looking for their venue come prepared with when doing site-visits?

An open mind of how a space could work for them and their vision. Couples should have what’s most important to them as a couple in front of mind. Are you looking for a feeling? A great ceremony space? A team you connect with? What are your non-negotiables? From there you can see the potential of any space you are walking into.

In the Post-Covid world, what should couples know when planning their wedding?

First of all, we hear you and we understand! This is such an exciting time in your lives and it should be celebrated! Communication is key, be sure and book with vendors that have an open line of communication and that you feel comfortable with! They will help you navigate through the uncertainty.

What trends and/or styles are you really looking forward to seeing in your space?

All of them! Seeing how each couple transforms the space is so exciting! We love how we are seeing more bold colors for 2021, as well as the incorporation of their furry friends. Whether they are there as the ring bearer or have a specialty cocktail in their honor, we never tire of seeing their sweet pets along for the ride.

The team here at Haute Floral really loves an opportunity to play with color and bold ingredients. This style was a total dream for us! And set against the opulent backdrop of The Olana, the whole day was pure perfection!

If we had to pick our favorite details is would absolutely have to be a tie between our beautiful bride’s bouquet, packed with peonies, ranunculus and blue thistle, and the head table design! We created some towering arrangements full of these punchy blooms that almost seem to float effortlessly over the table with their glass stands.

Fresh, Modern White Wedding at The Vaquero Club

A classic green and white wedding is always beautiful! Plus, it’s always a treat when we get to work with our wonderful friends at Southern Affairs. We are excited to share this real wedding with you today!

Our couple tied the knot at The Vaquero Club which provided a beautiful backdrop for their nuptials. We love the bridesmaid in soft blue dresses to add some subtle color into their wedding palette. Our favorite moment has the be the gorgeous floral ceremony arch with soft, gauzy white fabric moving so pretty with the breeze! It was seriously the perfect day for an outdoor ceremony!

We also love how this couple brought some fun into their reception design with an over the top, ultra stylish balloon and disco ball installation. Talk about setting the scene for a party!

Special thank you to Stefani Welsh Photography for capturing everything so beautifully. See the full gallery and vendor team below!

Fig & Fall Wedding at The Olana, Autumn Wedding Inspiration

Today’s real wedding is a gorgeous example of a unique fall wedding palette!

Usually when you envision a fall wedding, you picture 2 different color schemes: traditional fall colors like oranges, yellow, and reds, or burgundy and navy. Now, don’t misunderstand, there is nothing with those palettes at all! In fact, they can both be done beautifully! But the point is we see them all the time! So why not think outside of the seasonal box?

Our couple tied the knot at the incredible Olana venue and envisioned a day full of plum and fig tones, with accents of silvery-gray and lots of organic texture. We had a blast pulling it together!

Favorite moments have the include the beautiful ceremony arch that created the perfect frame around our couple as they said their vows. And of course, the head table design was perfection! When working in very large and grand spaces, it is always a good idea to bring florals in high! This draws the eye up and ensures that your florals don’t get lost in the vertical space of the venue! It allows your design to be seen throughout the room.

Special thank you to Maxwell & Gray for their wonderful planning and design and Charla Storey for capturing all the details so beautifully.
